DESCRIPTION
Tibshelf is a village of considerable extent, lying 4 miles
north-east of Alfreton, 8 miles south-east of Chesterfield and
close to the Nottinghamshire border. The area was rich in coal
seams and the main employment was in the collieries. Other
Inhabitants were employed in the frame-work knitting of cotton
hose. It is now a rapidly expanding Industrial area.
At the Domesday Survey, the manor of Tibshelf (then Tibecel) was
held by Robert, under the King. It was then held by successive
families of Heriz, Belers, Swillington and Pierrepont. In 1552
it was given to St. Thomas's Hospital, London, by its founder,
Edward VI.
The church of St. John the Baptist dates back to a very early
age, having been rebuilt in 1729. In 1887 the nave was again
rebuilt and the aisle was enlarged. Also in 1887 the churchyard
was enlarged by an acre of land given by St. Thomas's Hospital,
London. The registers, which date from 1627, have been deposited
with the County Record Office.
