Surnames from the Memorial Inscriptions of St James Church, Riddings

DESCRIPTION
The village of Riddings lies 3 miles south of Alfreton. The name, once spelt, Rydding is derived from the Danish word "Rydde" meaning to clear, indicating that this village was one of the first settlements in an area which had been one vast forest. It is here in the middle of the 18th century that an urn containing 800 Roman coins was found, perhaps spoils from a robbery on the nearby Roman Road, Ryknield Street, which linked Little Chester near Derby with Sheffield.
In the mid. 19th century James Oakes, who owned a colliery and ironworks in the area employing many local people, discovered the presence of oil on his land which brought fame to Riddings. The first paraffin-wax candles were produced here, but now the flow of oil has ceased. The expansion of the coal mining and iron industries in the early 1800's brought workers into the area from far afield and the population increased dramatically. Framework Knitting was carried out in the cottages and the workers had to walk to Nottingham to sell their finished goods.
