Surnames from the Memorial Inscriptions of St Leonard's Church, Monyash
Published in October 2011
DESCRIPTION
The village of Monyash, one of the gateways to Lathkill Dale, lies 5 miles west of Bakewell. The houses are built mainly of limestone and there is a large pond at the centre of the village and a village green on which stands the ancient market cross. Monyash was once a busy market "town" and it was at the village green where the market was held. This was also a thriving lead-mining area with its own barmote court held in the 17th century inn "The Bull's Head" which still stands.
Monyash was formerly a chapelry of Bakewell, but has an ancient church which was restored, except for the porch, in 1887. Cox, in his churches of Derbyshire states that the font cover is inscribed, "W.B.R.N. 1733", but this inscription cannot now be found. Surviving registers, dating from 1754 for baptisms and burials and from 1813 for marriages are deposited at the County Record Office and are available there on film. The Bishops' Transcripts, however, date from 1672 and can be seen at the Record Office at Lichfield.
