Surnames from the Memorial Inscriptions of St Alkmund Church, Duffield
Published in April 2012
DESCRIPTION
The church of St. Alkmund is of ancient foundation. A church and a priest were mentioned in the Domesday survey of 1086. The Manor of Duffield was then held by Henry de Ferrers, but was forfeited to the crown in 1266. Traces of the Norman building can still be seen in the north wall of the chancel.
Situated as the Church is, on the banks of the River Derwent, it has been subjected to many floods during the centuries, but appears not to have suffered.
The old parish of Duffield once covered a vast area, including the townships of Hazelwood, Holbrook, Makeney, Milford, Shottle and Windley, also the chapelries of Belper, Heage and Turnditch, and parts of Ashleyhay and Idridgehay.
