Surnames from the Memorial Inscriptions of St Michael Church, Breaston
Published in April 2016
DESCRIPTION
Breaston is situated between Derby and Nottingham and is the most southerly parish in the Borough of Erewash. Breaston was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and is referred to as Braydesron, Braidstune or Braidstone.
The first church of St. Michael was built in the early 13th century and was much smaller than the one seen today. It was originally a Chapel of Ease to Wilne, one of two parochial churches in the ancient prebend of Sawley. There are six bells, including one of the late 18th century a gift of Henry Willoughby, in 1657. The font was a gift of Elizabeth Willoughby in 1791. Baptisms and weddings took place at Wilne before 1791 and until 1824, when the churchyard was consecrated by the Bishop of Lichfield, corpses were carried over the medieval corpse-way to Wilne for burial.
During the 19th century Breaston changed from a purely agricultural village to one of farming and light industry, including lace manufacturers, blacksmiths and cordwainers.
