DESCRIPTION
The village of Baslow is situated at the north entrance to Chatsworth Park,
set amongst an area of meadows, hill and moorland. The River Derwent flows
through the village with the church standing on its east bank. The traffic
to Bakewell used to pass over an old stone bridge of three arches, but this
was replaced by a bridge built in 1925. Baslow developed from a group of
small settlements, Over End, Nether End, Far End, Goose Green and Bridge
End. The latter being by the bridge and the church and the oldest part of
the settlement. Some of the houses here date from the 17th century. Until
1869 Baslow was part of the parish of Bakewell.
The oldest parts of the church, the north aisle and the tower, date from
the 13th century. In 1853 an architect, nephew of Joseph Paxton, rebuilt
the chancel.
The east facing dial on the church clock, instead of the usual numerals,
has the letters spelling the name VICTORIA and the date of the Queen's
Diamond Jubilee, 1897, which was also the date the clock was made.
The church registers, dating from 1569, have been deposited at the County
Record Office, at Matlock and are available on film to researchers.
