Surnames from the Memorial Inscriptions of St Lawrence Church, Barlow
Published in April 2013
DESCRIPTION
The church dedicated to St. Lawrence dating from 1142 has undergone several restorations. The oldest memorials within the church are to the Barley/Barlow family (who took their name from the village) dated in the 15th century and are in the Barley side chapel. The first husband of Bess of Hardwick was Robert Barley, the young Squire. They were married when she was 16 and he was 14, but Robert died aged 15 and Bess inherited the family's wealth.
The village of Barlow lies within 4 miles north-west of Chesterfield and although so close to the town, it is still very rural with mellowed stone dwellings and farmhouses along and just off the winding street. There were many farms in and around Barlow, but only a few remain and there has been a change from dairy farming to arable. In more recent times Barlow was a mining village. The last mine closed in the 1960's. Lead was mined here from the 13th century and the names Bole Hill, Smelting House Lane and Furnace Lane mark the lead smelting sites.
The registers for Barlow which begin in 1573 have been deposited at the County Record Office at Matlock where they are available on Film to researchers.
