Surnames from the Memorial Inscriptions of St Martin Church, Alfreton
Published in October 2014
DESCRIPTION
The parish church of St. Martin, Alfreton will be found at the end of a short road leading from the top of King Street and adjoining the grounds of Alfreton Hall, once the home of the Palmer-Morewood family who were owners of the local coalmines. The Hall, originally dating from around 1750 was acquired by Derbyshire County Council in 1963 and in 1968 part of the structure was demolished due to mining subsidence. The remaining building is now a Conference Venue with a public park and leisure facilities.
The ancient church was built by Robert Fitz-Ranulph who gave it to the Abbey of Beauchief in 1174. In the 14th century the church was mainly rebuilt, but the early tower remains and some parts of the early stonework can still be found in the structure of the walls. Major restoration work was carried out in 1868 when the east window was installed.
The earliest surviving original parish registers, now held at the County Record Office at Matlock, date from 1706. However the Bishops' Transcripts held at the Lichfield Record Office, date from 1662. Until well into the 1800's the parish of Alfreton included the villages of Ironville, Riddings, Somercotes and Swanwick.
